As you probably already know, I started studying tourism in 2016 and graduated in 2020. Yes, the year when COVID-19 paused the entire world and tourism was probably the industry affected the most. Even with all this happening, I truly believe in this industry for many many many reason... to begin with, we all want to go on vacations and travel and also, all of us, professionals working in the tourism industry will help you make those vacations possible and with all the guaranties this new reality (as a like to call it) pushes us to ensure your safety while you relax. So here goes 10 reasons why you should still study tourism and be part of this amazing industry!
1. It's an easy career to access and complete
If my professors see this they are probably going to freak (haha). But, hey, it's true. Here in Spain you don't need a high score to access this career. Most of my classmates started studying tourism because of this reason but they also liked everything they were learning about the industry. And that brings me to reason #2...
2. Tourism is not only hotels and airplanes
Most of my classmates thought that tourism was only airplanes and hotels. False. Tourism is so wide and has so many opportunities that I'm sure one of them is going to fit your profile. For example, if you are into arts you can work as a tour guide or in a museum or even in heritage. If you're not sure about what kind of tourism business you'd like to work at, well, that's reason #3.
3. Tons of internship opportunities for students
Internships are a great way to find out what branch in tourism you’re into. You might think you’d like to work in a hotel or travel agency for example and when you work hands-on you might realize it’s not really your thing. In my university, all of us had to do internships every summer as part of our curriculum and to be able to graduate. Each of those internships had to be different. So I had the chance to explore how is the dayaday of a tour guide, hotels, online travel agency, restaurant and surveyor. I highly recommend trying as much as you can. And...
4. Working in hotels isn't so bad either
My first internship was in a hotel and I had an amazing experience. So much that, in long term, I’d love to have my one little boutique hotel. I liked being part of a tourist vacation experience. You’re probably one of the first people that person sees in the destination and helping him/her get around your city and then telling you how amazing everything was, it’s a gratifying feeling. But there are other options....
5. Work anywhere you want
As for work opportunities, there is a huge market to access and, because this career is practically universal, you can work anywhere (always with the corresponding legal documentations, of course, like visas). Wouldn’t it be nice to work here? 😍
6. Meet people that are passionate about traveling like you
Everyone in the building love, live and breathe tourism and everything related to it. These will be lifelong friends, colleagues and maybe even future business partners. Even the teachers will become important pillars to you and your future career in the industry. After graduation, they would still love to help you and your projects.
7. 90% of the classes are fun
Well, at least to me they were... I found them all interesting for sure but there are really fun classes as well. My two favorite classes were Human Resources and Investigation Techniques. In these two we had to do really fun projects that connected to all the material learned. For HR we had to interview our classmates and give them tests until we found our final candidate that would be the one we “hire”. For the Investigation class, we had to choose a tourism business we’d like to investigate and go as spies to observe their services (we nailed it btw😎).
8. Go on vacations when it's cheaper
This is probably one of my favorite things about this career. Work when everyone is enjoying their vacations and then you’ll have the destination to yourself. When you go on vacation everyone is back at work and prizes to travel decreases since there isn’t a big demand.
9. Be different
Tourism has been around for a very long time but the study and specialization of it at a university level is practically recent. Let me ask you something, if someone that studies economy is an economist or someone that studies law is a lawyer. Then how do you call someone that studies tourism? Well, since it is so new, there isn’t a title or definition for us. However, we define ourselves as Touristmologists. This is a topic that I’ll talk about on my blog to recognize it. So, how cool is it to be part of this!
10. Love what you do
Many people start studying something they don't like. Maybe because their parents make them or society pushes them to it. I personally wanted to study other careers before I got to university but I had to be honest with myself and what I was truly passionate about. This decision makes me love what I do everyday! I also believe my classmates whose first choice was not tourism can say the same. This is an industry that creates happiness and it will also make you happy!
There is so much to discover and learn about our world and their people. Tourism is one way to do so. I hope these reasons motivated you to enroll and study tourism. Share your thoughts with me on the comments!
